Re:action festival
The Re:Action festival is a Music and Arts initiative in Newtown promoting the Local Arts in aid of a Local Cause.
On the afternoon/evening of Saturday November 22nd an all-ages music festival will take place in the heart of King Street on the grounds of Newtown Mission Uniting Church.
This new event is designed to do the following:
1. Promote the work of local, creative professionals, with a particular emphasis on showcasing a selection of the many talented emerging and more established music acts from the local area
2. Raise awareness of the impoverished conditions that many of our fellow residents in the Newtown precinct are living in.
3. Raise money to support the work of Compassion: an initiative and program run by Newtown Mission which seeks to practically assist the homeless as well as other struggling members of this community who are living with sickness, in isolation and in poverty.
“What makes this festival different,” says festival co-director Joanna Argall, “is that we aim to not only celebrate Newtown’s unique spirit and character but draw attention to the area’s mounting poverty. It is estimated that about 20% of Newtown’s residents are living in impoverished or sub-standard living conditions.”  Program director Rev Brian Unterrheiner estimates that requests from the poor for food, accommodation and help with utility bills and other needs in Newtown have risen by up to 35% during 2008.The Re:action Festival will feature 14 bands and artists, including Cuthbert and the Nightwalkers, Elana Stone Band, Gethsemane, Sam Buckingham, Joe Hardy, Tokenview, Greg Cooper,  Vonsonic, Crash Through, The Wild Frontier, Bon Marche, Once, Mem Davis and Colleen O’Connell.  The work of some local visual artists and designers will also be exhibited at the event
